Chennai, May 6: Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) comfortably beat the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) by six wickets in the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Saturday afternoon in Chennai.
CSK achieved the required target of 140 in the 18th over, thanks to an excellent opening partnership between Devon Conway (44 in 42) and Ruturaj Gaekwad (30 in 16). The duo stitched a 46-run partnership in 4.1 overs. Afterwards, Ajinkya Rahane (21) and Shivam Dube (26) contributed with cameos.
Earlier, CSK bowler Matheesha Pathirana starred with the ball by claiming three wickets while conceding only 15 runs.
CSK captain Dhoni after winning the toss elected to field first, but Mumbai Indians had a terrible start to their batting. MI lost Cameron Green (6), Ishan Kishan (7) and skipper Rohit Sharma (0) cheaply and were reduced to 14-3 in the third over. Young Nehal Wadhera (64 in 51) and Surya Kumar Yadav (26 in 22) added some respectability to MI total. MI managed only 139/8 in their allocated 20 overs.
For MI, only veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla was impressive with the ball. He took two wickets for 25 runs from his quota of 4 overs.
