Sanaa, Yemen: As many as 80 persons have died while hundreds injured in an unprecedented stampede at a charity distribution even in war-ravaged Yemen on Thursday, officials said.

Media reports described the crush as one of the deadliest stampedes in a decade.

According to media accounts, the latest tragedy to hit the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest country came days ahead of the Eid al-Fitr, a holy festival of the Muslims around the globe. Eid marks the end of the Islamic holy month of fasting called as Ramadan.
