Sanaa, Yemen: As many as 80 persons have died while hundreds injured in an unprecedented stampede at a charity distribution even in war-ravaged Yemen on Thursday, officials said.
Media reports described the crush as one of the deadliest stampedes in a decade.
According to media accounts, the latest tragedy to hit the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest country came days ahead of the Eid al-Fitr, a holy festival of the Muslims around the globe. Eid marks the end of the Islamic holy month of fasting called as Ramadan.
At least “85 were killed and more than 322 were injured” after the stampede in the Bab al-Yemen district of the capital, a Huthi security official told wire agencies.
